Task 2

There are many people who use 3D technologies for various purposes.  3D modelling on computers is mostly used by product designers because they create almost everything in 3D softwares such as, Maya.  Product designing involves the designer of the product researching designs that would complement the audience and type of product.  There are many ways that a designer could create and make their designs by using different softwares.  The popular software packages may include Autodesk Maya or Adobe Photoshop.  Also, if they are designing a 3D object, they may use Blender or 3D Max instead of Maya because all of these softwares enable the designer to produce 3D designs.  Also, there are other uses within 3D technology such as, animation, TV, film and video games.  Animation is key within 3D because it is used to develop 3D cartoons and animations.  Video games and animated TV that are 3D similar to animation because it creates and gives a 3D effect.  Films are very dependent on 3D if they are developing a film that uses CGI characters as well as real people will use a mix of filming and software.

Some career field that the application of 3D may be used in would be web and architecture because a 3D application may be used to develop ideas for a new building or develop and existing building.  A web based design may consist of designing a website from scratch or using an existing programme or software to develop a website.  Building design is another career field what would require 3D application because it can produce an accurate design and development using the software.

Programming interfaces, also referred to as Application Program Interface (API), is a set of functions and rules that are used by computers to communicate and interact to complete a command by the user.  API is a set of protocols, routines and tools, which can be used to build software applications.  Having a good API will make it easier to develop a program by offering all the building block needed.  The programmer will then put the blocks together to develop and build the software.  Although, most APIs are designed for programmers, the user can also benefit from them because they guarantee that all programs that use a common API, will also have a similar interface, making it easier for the user to learn new programs.

Graphics pipeline is a series of operations that are used to generate an image using object order processing.  It may also refer to a sequence of interconnected stages through, which the data and command describing a scene go through whilst being rendered.  Graphic pipeline is a process, which goes into the production process of realised 3D movie character and environment.  This is better known as computer graphics pipeline to industry professionals.

Rendering techniques can include engines, distributed rendering, lighting and textures.

Rendering engines is a software component that takes marked up content and formatting information and displays the formatted content on the screen.

Distributed rendering is the application of parallel programming to the computational domain of computer graphics.

Rendering lighting is the result of scattering in the human lens, which is interpreted as a bright spot in a scene by our brain.

Rendering textures are special types of textures created and updated at runtime.

Vertices are where two or more lines meet at a point.  They also describe the corners or intersections of a 3D object.

vertex

Lines are a long and narrow mark that can be straight or curved continuous extent of length.  Two lines meet at the vertex.  The line runs from one vertex to another.  You are then able to manipulate the position of the line depending on the object you have created.  Straight lines are most likely to be found on a cube.

Curves are a line that gradually deviates from being straight.  Curved line are harder to manipulate then straight lines because they are already curved.  Curved lines are most likely to be found on a sphere or cylinder.

Polygons are a 2D shape with at least 3 straight sides and angles, but traditionally have 5 or more sides and angles.  It is a plane figure that is formed together through a closed path.  Polygons are create by a sequence of edges.  A complete polygon can be referred to as the body.

Face is any of the individual surfaces of the object.  It is the whole side of an object, which is formed through a set of edges.

Meshes are a structure of a model where the structure is made up of sets of lines and faces.  It is a collection of vertices, edges and faces that can determine the shape of the 3D object.  This gives your 3D object a realistic look because all the vertices, edges and faces are put together.

Mesh construction is the process in, which the user is able to create an object with the polygon meshes.  The polygons can be in different forms of elements, which include vertices, faces, edges, polygons and surfaces.

Box modelling is technique used in 3D modelling where you take a basic primitive shape and make it a rough draft of your final model and then sculpt out your final model from there.  This process requires the use of various tools and steps, which can be repeated to create the specific look in, which the user is trying to create.

Extrusion modelling is a technique that is commonly used in 3D animation where the modeller starts with a small part of the model and works outwards by extruding the polygon, edge or point.  In this method you can create a 2D shape by tracing the outline if the image plane by using the line tool.  You would then use the second image plane, which would be at a different angle and view and extrude the 2D shape into a 3D shape by following the outline of the shape and image plane.  This method is commonly used when modelling most 3D objects with a complex design.  However, most 3D modellers would create half of the object and then mirror the model depending on what model they are creating to make the 3D object symmetrical and save time.

Common primitives are forms of shapes, which can be used or modified by the user.  They are the most simple polygonal models that 3D software can create.  This makes the software user friendly because it allows the user to create a model by using this as a base for their 3D model if they aren’t creating their model from scratch.  The standard primitives in a 3D software such as Maya are, the cone, sphere, pyramid, teapot, cylinder and cube.
